SOX and vulnerability scanning: the honest relationship

Of the seven frameworks in this series, SOX has the weakest direct link to vulnerability scanning — and we'd rather say that plainly than stretch the connection. Section 404 doesn't mention scanning, or even IT security, by name. Here's what it actually requires, and where application security testing realistically fits into a SOX audit.

"Start 7-Day Trial" submits a request — Vooki Pro's team reviews it and sends the trial license and installation instructions; it is not an instant self-serve activation.

The requirement

What Section 404 actually says

Section 404 — Management assessment

Requires management to assess the effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting each year and include that assessment in the company's annual SEC filing. For most public companies, an independent external auditor must also evaluate and attest to those controls.

IT general controls aren't defined by SOX

SOX doesn't define IT general controls (ITGCs) itself. Auditors assess them as part of reviewing internal controls over financial reporting, commonly using the COSO framework for principles and COBIT for technical control objectives — frameworks SOX references only by industry convention, not by statutory requirement.

Where Vooki Pro fits

How vulnerability scanning relates to a SOX audit

The realistic connection

If a web application processes, stores, or reports data that feeds into financial statements, an auditor assessing ITGCs will typically want evidence that the application is reasonably secured against tampering or unauthorized access — vulnerability scanning is one way to produce that evidence, alongside access control reviews, change management records, and backup testing.

What this doesn't mean

Scanning one application with Vooki Pro does not make you "SOX compliant" — SOX compliance is a company-wide financial reporting and internal-controls discipline, assessed by your auditor across access management, change management, backups, and more. A DAST scan is one piece of evidence for one narrow slice of that, specific to financially-relevant applications.

The SOX compliance report

Exporting a scan as a SOX-mapped report (HTML or PDF, via the Export menu or the CLI's compliance_framework: sox config) organizes findings around controls relevant to financial reporting systems — useful as supporting documentation for an ITGC review, not as a standalone SOX attestation.

FAQ

Common questions

Does SOX require vulnerability scanning?
No — not directly. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act's Section 404 requires management to assess internal controls over financial reporting, often with external auditor attestation, but the statute itself doesn't define IT general controls or name vulnerability scanning. Auditors commonly assess vulnerability management as one IT general control supporting the integrity of systems that affect financial reporting, typically referencing frameworks like COSO and COBIT rather than SOX's own text.
Why would a DAST tool matter for SOX compliance at all?
If a web application processes or reports data that feeds financial statements, its security is in scope for IT general controls review — vulnerabilities that could let someone alter or falsify that data are relevant to an auditor assessing whether financial reporting controls are reliable. Scanning that application is a way to evidence that control, not a SOX requirement in itself.
Does Vooki Pro generate a SOX compliance report?
Yes — scan findings can be exported as a report mapped to controls relevant to financial reporting systems, in HTML or PDF, for use as supporting evidence in an ITGC review.
