Vooki Pro vs. ZAP: Which DAST tool fits your workflow?

Vooki Pro is a commercial desktop DAST scanner with local AI-assisted triage and compliance-mapped reporting. ZAP — formerly "OWASP ZAP" — announced it was leaving the OWASP Foundation on 1 August 2023 to join the Linux Foundation's Software Security Project, with the move completing that September. On 24 September 2024, three members of ZAP's Core Team (Simon Bennetts, Rick Mitchell, Ricardo Pereira) became Checkmarx employees — this was not an acquisition of the ZAP project, which remains independently governed; the "ZAP by Checkmarx" name reflects the Core Team's employer, not ownership. ZAP is a genuinely capable, free, open-source scanner with a large add-on ecosystem. This page compares it against Vooki Pro fairly, distinguishing what ZAP includes by default from what requires an add-on.

"Start 7-Day Trial" submits a request — Vooki Pro's team reviews it and sends the trial license and installation instructions; it is not an instant self-serve activation.

Vooki Pro's guided wizard needs no scripting. ZAP's form-based authentication is also scriptless (Context + Users + a logged-in indicator, via UI or API) — but ZAP's documented fallback for anything it can't handle natively, including some token-based and multi-step flows, is a script run through the Script Console or HTTP Sender.

Vooki Pro ships compliance-mapped reports (7 frameworks) out of the box; no official compliance-framework report template was found in ZAP's documentation.

Vooki Pro includes a support portal and email with its license; ZAP's own FAQ describes its community extras as "subject to change without notice." Neither product documents a formal SLA.

Who switches

Who considers switching

  • Teams currently maintaining their own ZAP add-on stack (Automation Framework, OpenAPI Support, Report Generation, Retest) who'd rather have that functionality built into one product.
  • Security testers who need compliance-ready reports without building the framework mapping themselves.
  • Teams that want a guided first-run experience instead of configuring Contexts, session management and login indicators by hand — even though ZAP's own form-auth path doesn't require scripting, it is a multi-step manual configuration.
  • Organizations that want a named, license-tied support channel rather than community support, while recognizing that neither option carries a documented SLA.
  • Teams interested in AI-assisted triage that's a mature, on-device part of the core workflow rather than ZAP's newer (2026) cloud/MCP-oriented AI additions.

"Not found in the reviewed official documentation" means the capability was not confirmed in official sources at the time of writing — it does not mean the capability is absent.

In practice

The practical differences that matter

Core vs. add-on, stated precisely

ZAP's automation, API scanning, reporting and retest capabilities are all real, officially documented, and well-maintained — they're distributed as Marketplace add-ons rather than bundled into the minimal install. A team willing to assemble and maintain that add-on stack can cover much of the same ground as Vooki Pro's built-in equivalents. The practical difference is who owns the assembly and maintenance work, not whether the capability exists.

Authentication: scriptless for forms, documented-fallback for everything else

ZAP's own FAQ confirms form-based authentication — Context, Users, a regex-based logged-in/out indicator — is configurable through the UI or API without writing a script. What isn't confirmed in official docs is a scriptless path for OAuth2 or other multi-step flows; ZAP's "Handling Authentication Yourself" page documents a static-token environment-variable method for simple cases and names HTTP Sender scripts as "likely to be the most useful type" when you're handling auth yourself. Vooki Pro's six built-in auth methods, including OAuth2 Client Credentials, are configured as a single wizard step with no scripting in any case.

Compliance reporting is a genuine, documented gap on ZAP's side

We looked specifically for an official compliance-framework report template in ZAP's documentation and didn't find one. SARIF output is useful for code-scanning tool integration but isn't a framework-mapped audit report. Vooki Pro generates reports mapped to 7 frameworks (OWASP Top 10, PCI DSS v4, NIST 800-53, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, SOX) directly from scan results.

AI timelines and architecture differ, not just maturity

ZAP's AI features only arrived in 2026 and center on an MCP server letting external AI assistants drive ZAP via its REST API — integration and orchestration, not an in-product local triage model. ThreatLens has been part of Vooki Pro's core scan workflow and runs fully on-device.

Platform & licensing

Deployment, data handling, licensing

Vooki Pro

Desktop app, local storage only, AI runs on-device after a one-time ~5GB download, scanning needs no internet beyond the target, but the license re-validates roughly daily while online (about a week of offline tolerance between checks). $399–$999/year per domain, no seat limits. Trial requests are reviewed by Vooki Pro's team before the license and installation instructions are issued.

ZAP

Desktop, CLI, or Docker — runs locally or in your own CI infrastructure; no official hosted ZAP scanning service. Free and open source under Apache v2. Checkmarx separately sells its own commercial DAST product built on ZAP technology — a distinct commercial offering, not a paid-support tier for open-source ZAP itself.

Decision guide

Who should choose which

Choose Vooki Pro if

You want compliance-ready reporting, a guided setup, and local AI triage without assembling and maintaining your own add-on stack, and a license-tied support channel matters to your team.

Choose ZAP if

Budget is the primary constraint, your team is comfortable configuring Contexts/sessions and maintaining add-ons, and you want the flexibility of an open-source tool you can extend and script freely — ZAP's scripting model is also a strength for teams with unusual auth flows that off-the-shelf wizards don't anticipate.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Vooki Pro an alternative to OWASP ZAP?
Yes. ZAP (now "ZAP by Checkmarx," reflecting its Core Team's employer, not a change in ownership) is a free, open-source scanner; Vooki Pro is a commercial desktop DAST tool with guided setup, local AI triage, and compliance-mapped reporting included by default.
When did ZAP leave OWASP, and is it owned by Checkmarx now?
ZAP announced its departure from the OWASP Foundation on 1 August 2023, joining the Linux Foundation's Software Security Project instead; the move completed that September. In September 2024, three ZAP Core Team members became Checkmarx employees — ZAP itself was not acquired and remains independently governed.
Does ZAP require scripting for authenticated scanning?
Not for form-based login — ZAP's own FAQ confirms that's configurable via Context, Users, and a logged-in indicator through the UI or API. For OAuth2 or other multi-step flows, official docs don't confirm a scriptless path; the documented fallback is a script via HTTP Sender or the Script Console.
Does Vooki Pro use AI locally?
Yes — ThreatLens runs entirely on your device. ZAP's AI features, added in 2026, are oriented around cloud/MCP-based integrations rather than a local triage model.
Does Vooki Pro produce compliance reports like a framework-mapped audit deliverable?
Yes — 7 frameworks (OWASP Top 10, PCI DSS v4, NIST 800-53, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, SOX). We found no equivalent official template in ZAP's documentation.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — 7 days, full feature access, no credit card required. The request is reviewed by Vooki Pro's team before the trial license and installation instructions are sent.
Unverified, explicitly not claimed: whether ZAP supports scriptless OAuth2/multi-step authentication in the current release; any named paid-support SKU for ZAP under Checkmarx.
